A Complete Guide to Wheelchair Ramps with Handrails
Providing an accessible solution is essential whether you are providing access to your home, business, shop or office. Wheelchair ramps with handrails are a popular choice for many as it provides access for many from those using wheelchairs to those who require additional support when walking. Handrails also enhance the overall safety of ramps, especially for ramps which are used to overcome higher heights and are generally recommended where the ramp is used in a public area.
At The Ramp People we offer several wheelchair ramps with handrails including our RollAble Wheelchair Ramp and Wheelchair Ramp Kit with Handrails. Both of these can be used with double handrails, a single handrail or no handrails. For those seeking a more long term access solution, we have Modular Wheelchair Ramp Kits.
Do Wheelchair Ramps Require Handrails?
For temporary wheelchair ramps, such as folding ramps, there are no regulations to state handrails must be installed. Often those purchasing a wheelchair ramp for use with their wheelchair will purchase a ramp without handrails as they do not need them whilst those purchasing a ramp to use with a walker, walking stick or rollator will often select a ramp with handrails.
Whilst the regulations do not state handrails are required, for businesses, where possible, we do recommend purchasing an access ramp with handrails to allow your workplace, shop or building to be as accessible as possible. The Equality Act 2010 requires service providers to make reasonable adjustments for those with disabilities and therefore providing a ramp with handrails will allow you to take an additional step to ensure your property is as accessible as possible. In terms of health and safety, depending on the height you are going up, where the ramp is used in a public area handrails are generally preferable for additional safety.
For permanent wheelchair ramps, such as concrete structures, handrails are required as permanent wheelchair ramps must comply to building regulations.
